There’s always one morning when the air feels different. Is that a... a slight chill? Is there a momentary nip in the air? Oh baby.
It’s a subtle thing, but you can’t miss it. The trees look mostly the same. The coats and boots are still stored away, but I suddenly could really go for a PSL, a waffle-knit henley and scents that feel a little cozier.
I’ve never subscribed to the idea of a seasonal fragrance wardrobe. An unwritten rule where we’re supposed to pack away one version of ourselves and bring out another feels like a lot of admin for something that’s meant to be personal.
I wear Coconuts all year. I love it in the heat of summer and even when the streets are filled with the slush we call snow in Manhattan. It’s so good, it’s seasonless.
However, what changes is what I wear with it, because I do like to layer over here.
When the air gets a little crispy, I add Pretty Boy. What? Yes, yes I do. Don’t knock it ’til you try it. Pretty Boy is a little more masculine and super green, and it gives Coconuts just enough freshness for those in-between days when the weather feels different, even though we’re not fully into sweaters yet.
As it gets colder, I start leaning more into Smokeshow. It has this musky, whipped-vanilla-ish thing that feels cloud-like, sparkly, cozy and light all at once. I usually reach for Pretty Boy during the day and Smokeshow at night, but there’s no real system beyond whatever I feel like smelling that day.
Sometimes I’ll do a couple of spritzes of Pretty Boy and walk through one spritz of Smokeshow when I want the combination to feel fresher. If I want something cozier, I’ll wear Smokeshow on its own or spritz it first and do a quick pass through Coconuts. That’s about as complicated as it gets.
At the cabin, the first little chill is the cue for everything else. Maybe there’s a breeze for part of the day, or one or two leaves start to fall, and suddenly I’m thinking about cooking different meals, lighting all the candles, bringing out the blankets and cuddling with my pups. It really is nesting season around here.
The feeling is a little different in Manhattan because everything happens outside of your tiny apartment. The same change in the air makes me think about outfits I want to wear, dinners I want to go to and friends I want to see. At the cabin, I’m thinking about how to make being at home feel great because I’m probably not going anywhere, which is honestly part of the appeal.
I love spring and summer, and really all the seasons. I’m a seasons person. I’m also completely ready for the next one once I sense it coming, and fragrance is usually one of the first places that shows up.
So I’m not putting Coconuts away or letting anyone dictate what types of scents belong in which season. I’m just adding something warmer, muskier or a little deeper when I feel like it. The minute there’s that first crisp chill, even if it only lasts for a moment, I know what’s coming, and I’m ready to get cozy around here.
